What's all this business about French Christmas?

  • My name—Noël—has been mispronounced, mislabeled, and mistaken since my parents bestowed it upon me one snowy March afternoon. It wasn't until a friend nicknamed me "French Christmas" that it came into focus. How much would our lives change if we could just see things differently?

The ALIEN movies (1, 2, and 4) were formative for me, too, and I agree that Ripley is the coolest movie hero a growing girl could hope for. But I do think that the first movie is better in terms of abolishing stereotypes than the second: in the first, there's Freudian imagery all over the place, with the phallic alien penetration the spaceship (named "Mother"), etc etc--but the crew reach maturity as they battle against it, leaving the lone figure of good, Ripley. The second film reverts to the nuclear family (quite literally, given the explosions), with the alien now a female fighting another female to decide who gets to keep a family, with only one mother-father-child group allowed (the human one, obviously--oh, with the equivalent of the gay uncle in the friendly cyborg). Much as I love Aliens, its subtitle could be "There goes the neighborhood."

I had a Brit Lit professor in college who was OBSESSED with Ripley as the ultimate female icon. She would go on and on about her. It was pretty meaningless to me at the time bc I hadn't seen any of the films but it all sounds very interesting. However, for me Sigourney Weaver will always be the woman with the poltergeist from Ghostbusters, II.

Whit, we have to watch these! I'm not big on the 3rd or 4th films, but 1 and 2 rock my world. Clearly.
