Maybe I'm hungry a lot this week, because this will be day two of food posts. But WHATEVER--the fact that they're putting in a CONEY ISLAND over on Southport Avenue definitely deserves a blog mention. For those of you Michiganders who live in Chicago, you feel my pain. There is nowhere else in the world you can get that hearty chili with beans, that perfectly tangy Greek dressing on a salad, that delicious crunchy chicken that comes in a Hanni than at a Coney Island. While Chicago is bursting at the seams with good sushi, tapas and pizza joints, it is sadly, sadly missing the Coney Island institution.
Happily, this will all be remedied sometime this fall. To all you non-Michigan people, mark your calendars. Make a reservation. And be sure to try the original Coney dog with the cheese fries. Personally, the founders of the Southport Coney Island should be on notice that they've filled part of the mitten-shaped hole in my heart.
